Horse blankets are rated by gram weight — the weight of the filling per square metre. It is the single most useful number when choosing a rug, because it maps directly to the temperature range the blanket is built for.
What Gram Weight Means
Gram weight describes the insulation layer, not the outer shell. A 100g rug has a light fill; a 600g rug is a heavy winter blanket. The higher the number, the warmer the horse stays.
Common Gram Weight Ranges
- 0g (no fill / lightweight) — fly sheets and coolers. Use in summer, in the stable after hard work, or for transport.
- 100–200g — light coolers and spring/autumn rugs. Good for mild nights and clipped horses in transition seasons.
- 200–300g — mid-weight stable rugs. The everyday choice for most of the year in temperate climates.
- 300–450g — heavier stable and turnout rugs for cold weather.
- 450–600g+ — heavy winter rugs for very cold regions and clipped horses kept outdoors.
Beyond the Fill: What Else Matters
Weight is only one part of the spec. For export orders, buyers should also check: outer fabric denier (600D to 1200D for turnout rugs), waterproof and breathable ratings, seam taping, closure type (buckles vs velcro), cross surcingles and leg straps.
Spec Sheet Discipline
When sourcing rugs for resale, ask for the fixed spec per SKU: gram weight, outer fabric, lining, unit weight, packed dimensions and carton rate. These numbers should be identical on every quote — if they change between samples and bulk, the product has changed.
